A streetrace gone wrong. An angsty and rebellious teenager, keen to impress anyone up for a challenge. And tonight, there was a challenger. Red light, GREEN LIGHT-- GO!!!! The cherry air freshener dangling from the rear view mirror, swinging forcefully side to side, and backward as the car cornered and accelerated. A bridge, 35 mph speed limit, and traffic ahead. Now, cut off due to a lane change by a vehicle ahead, I stomp on the brakes. The steering pulls ruthlessly toward the curb. CRASH! What felt like slow motion really happened in an instant. The wheel broke, the car spun around, skid for a while and stopped under the friction of it's own weight. Not knowing the wheel was broke I jam it back into gear, try to drive away! But alas, there would be no driving away without a wheel. Dreading the forced decision to own up to the cops as the spectacle has stopped witnesses and others and trapped by an immobilized vehicle, abandoned by my passenger, left behind by the car which initiated the race, I wait.
